I attended Augustana College, in Rock Island, Illinois, where I majored in Philosophy and in History.
After graduation, I attended the University of Colorado Graduate School for one year, then applied to, and was accepted by, the Peace Corps. I taught school in Liberia, West Africa for two years.
I applied to Creighton University, in Omaha, Nebrasks, and earned my Master's Degree in Special Education. After teaching for five years, I entered a doctoral program in Special Education, where I earned my Ph. D. in 1990.
I've taught at the K-12, and the university, level since leaving UN-L, and I presently am Associate Professor of Education in Special Education, at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. UMES is located on the Delmarva Peninsula, on the eastern shore of Chesapeake Bay.
My wife teaches Family and Consumer Sciences at a local high school. We have no children, but we do have Milton, a beagle mix, who is almost like a child.
Debra's interests include baking and cooking (she's an excellent chef), and church activities. Outside of my work in education, my special passion is photography, especially animals on the Eastern Shore.
